On Partisan Political Agendas and Local Government
Local government is about practical things that affect daily lives in routine ways:
- keeping people safe
- providing clean water
- picking up the garbage
- keeping our public spaces neat, clean and graffiti free
- maintaining the taxpayer's investment in infrastructure to help build community value.
In my experience, every time someone has used those larger partisan political issues in Clovis to hijack the debate in our local government, it has been to serve someone's very personal political, business or career agenda, not to improve the common good. I think local government officials should make decisions for the responsibilities they've assumed in their current position - for local issues for the local good – and not to serve audiences they may serve in a position they plan to seek in the future.
